Cars and Efficiency - Take Appropriate care of Your Tires by Napoleon Miles

You can increase the efficiency of your car by taking appropriate care of your tires. Unfortunately we usually ignore certain aspects of our cars that can make them much more efficient. With proper care and by adopting proper habits we can considerably increase the efficiency of our cars by taking appropriate care of our car's tires.

What can you do to increase the efficiency of your car by taking appropriate care of your tires? You should:

a) Maintain the proper tire pressure - Underinflated tires increase fuel consumption.

b) Avoid using wide tires - Wide tires have more friction with the road.

c) Do not overinflate your tires. Although overinflating your tires may save you some fuel, this practice is very dangerous. Therefore avoid such practice at all costs.

d) Take heed of weather conditions when checking the pressure of your tires. The pressure of your tires changes according to the temperature as well.

e) Use the 'horses for courses' policy - Use snow tires in the winter and summer tires in summer.

f) Store tires in an appropriate way - When you are not using your snow tires/summer tires, store them in an appropriate way. Do not carry them with you in the trunk. This will only increase the weight of your car and so increase inefficiency.

g) Read the instructions - Check instructions for the proper tire pressure and remember that this pressure aims at giving you the optimum service out of your tire. If you drive with underinflated tires more of the tire surface will come in contact with the road than was the manufacturer's intent and therefore the wear and tear will be quicker than expected. Similarly, because of more surface to surface contact between the tires and the road, the amount of friction will be greater than it would be with properly inflated tires. The end result would be a waste of fuel and shortened service life of your car's tires.
