Choosing between winter tires and studded tires

Author: Wursti
During the winter, driving is one of the most dangerous things that you can ever do and for that reason you should take all safety precautions possible. One of the main things that you should take care of is your car tires. There are 2 main types of tires suitable for that season – studded and winter tires. Here comes the big problem – How to make the choice between those 2 types of car tires. To make the choice easier for you, here are the basic features of both studded and winter tires:

• The studded tires(on Norwegian they are called piggdekk) are suitable when the temperatures are near freezing and in some cases when you drive on ice. Those tires will provide you the best traction possible, so you can safely drive on those roads. Furthermore, according to some of the most recent studies, with studded tires you will shorten the braking distance for your vehicle. However, the studded tires also damage the roads when used in the spring and also they do not have really good performance when driving on snowy or slushy roads. Furthermore, they are a lot noisier than the other types of tires and also at some states they are illegal, so before you buy such tires check what are the laws in the area where you live.

• The winter tires(vinterdekk ) on the other hand are specially created for driving on snowy and icy roads, so they have better performance during the winter than the studded tires. Furthermore, the deeper grooves of the winter tires allow the water and slush to fall away, while the wheel rotates, so there will be less build up and they are not as noisy as the all-season tires. However, the regulations for the winter tires are a bit misleading, because all the different models are labeled M+S, which means that the tires are suitable for mud and snow, but the amount of snow they are suitable for is different. Therefore, make sure that you will look for a snowflake symbol inside a mountain, because that is how the best performance winter tires are labeled.

In conclusion, I would like to say that the choice between those 2 types of tires suitable for winter driving depends on the area where you live and also the type of driving you plan to do. Although, the studded tires are suitable for states, where there is a lot of ice, I can assure you that you will drive safely on snow, but make sure that they are legal for the area where you live.To learn more information about car tires, please follow that link.
